My loving son, reminded me to always be “fervent with the truth” when experiencing an oppressive situation. He had moral purpose, living contrary to what is falsely preached as good; He experienced that goodness tortures itself with nonsense. Justin, like a hero of an earlier age on a pilgrimage, was a philosopher, scholar and traveler of life, sensitive to the dignity of others. He was blessed by the virtues of a cerebral and feeling nature; valiantly courageous, and ordained by a strong willed spirit to live unshackled from modern, institutionalized society into which all are disappeared. An explorer traveling the road and railways, and rejecting organized, punishing realities that haunt all, He was the accommodating camaraderie to both bad and good alike, to fugitives on the run, and the estranged living on society’s edges. Like all heroes, His early disappearance, passing from this open to question world of humankind, reminds those who knew Him, not to forget that all Life is not without godly reason.

Story shared: In Memory of Justin; With Love Your Cousin Edie http://cochranfh.frontrunnerpro.com/runtime/78643/runtime.php?SiteId=78643&NavigatorId=292016&ItemId=1135862&op=tributeFamilyStories&viewOpt=dpaneOnly&gid=story57146 I have attempted to write this several times, yet understandably I find a loss of words to express and articulate what can only be felt. I can't say I know what Justin would think or what he would want should he be looking down on us. But without uncertainty, I think he would want this to be treated as a day where we celebrate his life and what he meant to us, and to remember and share the good memories we have of him......rather than focus on what was lost, what can no longer be, and the "what if's". We owe it to him to pick our hearts up and turn this into an opportunity to come closer together and be reminded of how important and special family and close friends are in life. No matter how far one might drift from those who love them most, there is always a way to become close again; a way to mend severed relationships and to love unconditionally. I emphasis this because I feel Justin had come to a place in his life where he had turned a new leaf, had found the important things in life, and had come to appreciate the love and family he had while gaining a greater care for the impact he had on others. I listen to my birthday voicemail from Justin and Karin not but a month ago and can hear how happy he was. I hear the voice of a matured male yet the infliction of his voice triggers a picture in my mind of a young curly haired boy with a bounce in his step. I can hear them having so much fun and can see myself in the car with them. I know that same friendship and love and how important and meaningful it is. Remembering speaking with Justin on the phone and with our Madre and Karin during his visit, reinforces a feeling of confidence that he felt a great sense of family, love, and belonging during his last months. I won't try and write what Justin meant to us or to you, only we can know individually the depth of our relationships shared with Justin, the things we will cherish and miss, and the things we regret. Each of us will hold his memory in our own ways. Justin- I think back to your visit with me at NAU and remember a fearless kid that overcame so many hurdles in life. You chose to follow your sense of adventure, break the mold society has placed on us, and live every day as it came. In hindsight, I see now how much courage you had to face the world head on, with everyday full of uncertainty. You were only 26 when you passed, but you saw a great deal and experienced much of our world many of us will never see and are sheltered from. I remember us speaking about your travels and you commenting on how unattractive the world and people can be, yet you maintained a positive demeanor and seemed to always be willing to give others the benefit of the doubt. You never let the disappointments in life break you. You were always so grateful even when you were without; we can learn a great deal from that. You were living life and loving it. My memory of you then takes me to an easier time, a time of ignorance and bliss, and we are wandering the property at Madre's and Papa's: eating Popsicles, collecting Japanese beetles together, and finding snakes and turtles with Papa. And let's not forget our tea parties with Madre, Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth, and of course the unforgettable Dr. Woo. Your young voice rings in my ears: "No sank you, but sank you for de offer." It is never right to have to say goodbye to someone so young but know you have not left this world without your own unique print on it. I will remind myself of your opportunities lost and when I encounter new opportunities, I want to attempt to have the courage and sense of adventure you had. Importantly I want to remind myself, like you, to be grateful for what I have and to not let disappointment or uncertainty consume me. You have reminded us all how fragile and special life is. You are and will always be loved so. Someday again we two will have tea, Elizabeth and Dr. Woo. I love you Justin R.I.P your cousin Edie ~xo

To sum up a life we spent a part of is never easy. If I think back, my very first memory of Justin was his baptism with Father Maholam, an old family friend who presided over a series of life’s first rituals; marrying Chip and Helen, baptizing all of us, and giving them their very first communion as children in the old wooden plantation church down by the beach where we all grew up. My memories of the Bergs go so far into the past, I can’t even remember a first. Looking back, all I know is that it seemed right and natural to continue to share so many life threads through a common bond called Justin. He was a beautiful baby, and a blending of his mother and father in appearance with curly hair which would be the envy of any girl as he grew up. He had a love of knowledge, was a prolific reader, and possessed a theatrical flair and individual style……………………………………………………… As the cousins grew older, we looked forward to summer time, traveling every year across country for a long visit with Grandma and Papa. Justin was always there and part of the memory……………………………………………………. He had his very first birthday party at the age of one at Grandma Madres along with his cousin Forrest, surrounded by four generations of family and friends. That was soon followed by his first pair of leather baby shoes purchased on an outing with his mother and grandma to the big town of Franklin that same summer. I remember those first hesitant baby steps that would someday lead to a bigger world far beyond us. Justin was always such an endearing funny child in a very sweet sense. I remember him at the age of four walking around the beach house with his arm in his great grandmother’s brassiere which served as a sling, all the while complaining about his high blood pressure, which came out high bwood puesho. We could only assume he had heard that from the Berg grandmothers and we had a very good laugh…………………………………………………… Summers at Grandma Madre, meant he took tea every afternoon with his cousins, a tradition that dated back to summers when we were children visiting our own grandma and cousins. Justin played the part of Dr. Whoo opposite Little Edie and Forrest as Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett from Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice; a summer movie favorite. I don’t think Dr. Whoo existed in Jane Austin’s world, but being the individual, he was, Justin was always the famous Dr. Whoo. “No sank cuu, but sank cuu for the offer “ became an inside family expression for years afterwards following the tea parties. Justin was always polite. He was also inquisitive, funny and distinctively different! He was really just too good for this world; an odd little bird with exquisite feathers and voice………………………………………………………….. He passed his days playing with snakes and turtles with his cousins, caught butterflies with a birthday net, and learned all about the many bugs and creatures living in our very own woods. It was a private world, and with Papa as their teacher, days filled up with endless discoveries. Our freezer became a resting place for snakes, curious relics we still have and can’t bear to part with. I occasionally mull over the thorny problem of what to do in the future with Papa’s “collection”. Papa also made Justin giant water shoes cut from boards to navigate the “quick sandy swamp with his cousin Forrest at the edge of the pond where snapping turtles lived; a funny sight to think back on, as the boards were somehow attached with plastic zip ties. He talked endlessly about aliens and other diabolical horrors from the sci-fi films he watched with his dad, later adopting Doctor Whoo as his persona. Trips up to Papa’s garage on the hill meant fast race cars, the smell of oil, exhaust and big noise………………………………………………………………….. Summers at the gulf were eagerly awaited with a grand yearly 4th of July firework beach display with Uncle Kenny and all of the family, plenty of sand, sunny days and sticky popsicles. Late afternoons on the flats exploring for couch shells, a light breeze with the sun low in the sky, the water sparkling with so many lights and the sound of surf and the smell of salt ended each of our days. Justin’s yearly birthday parties to mark another summer passing, trips to the local aquarium, and endless games of Old Maid where everyone cheated, every child that is, make me wish I could somehow go back. Justin’s hand was always an open book with everyone else looking over each other’s shoulder. These became our days. He was Kenny’s helper, grandma’s treasure and his cousin’s best friend…………………………………………………………………….. Visiting Madre and Papa in the mountains, brought an endless round of picnics, lawn croquet, bad mitten, playing in the sprinkler, swimming at the lake, camping in Highlands, river rafting on the Ocoee, Grandma and Karin’s Peacock Pride Theatre Camp, creative theatre writing classes where he excelled, and Middle School Folk Arts Camp; the highlight being a set of fireplace tools he created in a blacksmith class in junior high. All activities that grandma orchestrated. The kids were always putting on home plays in the back yard with Justin commanding the very important role of Director and Stage Manager. He paraded across the yard with flair, holding up his applause signs and act scene numbers and in case we missed our cue, managing us as the audience as well……………………………………………………………………………As time passed, we took him to the Oglethorpe Shakespearean Festival , The Jimmy Carter Center, the Martin Luther National Historic Site, Fernbank Museum, the Biltmore House and the Atlanta Puppetry Center to name just a few. Cultural and educational experiences were very important to Papa and Grandma . Papa introduced Justin and his cousins to the civil war and all the local battlefields and museums bringing home as souvenirs small rocks to paint dates and battle names on. We still have those on a shelf; each rock now an individual memory. As I pass by them, thoughts of Papa and those summers come to mind; now with Justin gone -made all the more poignant…………………………………………………………… We had many wonderful summers together, a happy escape from the year’s trials and disappointments. Each year followed the next, all the while we watched Justin grow from infancy to a teenager; a handsome boy and a beautiful soul. We will always remember him with love and fond memories; bittersweet but with gratitude that we shared that time together. We imagine what turn your uniqueness and talent would ultimately have led you, and we are saddened by knowing it will never flower. Our hearts ache terribly as we realize our present can now only be a past memory…………………………………………………………… I will miss following your adventures after you left us , and reading your daily posts and blogs as you traveled around the country entertaining me with your clever turn of phrases, your humor, your escapades, and your insight into many subjects affirming your intelligence and depth of knowledge. We hoped you’d always come back. We missed you then and we miss you still…………………………………………………………….. The line is now strangely silent, no one is present, the adventures are now forever over, and we are left with only our own stories to tell. A first we never wanted, but will struggle to find a place for. I will remember your love of hats, your quirky nature, your gappy grin, the cock of your head and your happy walk. Justin …… we will miss you so. So long and farewell cousin, nephew and grandson. It truly was a grand ride!............................................................................................... In tribute, with great sadness, much love, and knowing you will always be first with us, your Kleinpeter Aunts, Uncle, Grandparents and Cousins Aunt Gretchen, Karin, Denise, Kenny, Madre, Forrest, Edie, Brittany and Rachel and Papa in absencia
